How to get a Portuguese driving licence with a licence from Nepal, India, Bangladesh or Pakistan

Licences from countries that are not part of the international road traffic conventions are not valid for driving in Portugal. If you live in Portugal you can ask IMT to exchange it, but you must pass a multimedia theory test and a practical driving test for each category.

Step by step

  1. Get a medical certificate from your doctor. The doctor sends it to IMT through the electronic medical certificates platform, so you don't need to send a copy.
  2. Submit the request online on IMT's 'A Minha Carta de Condução' portal and attach your documents.
  3. Wait for IMT to contact you. You will be sent to a service desk to hand in your foreign licence and give your biometric data.
  4. Pass the theory test (30 questions, at least 27 correct) and then the practical driving test.
  5. Receive your Portuguese licence at the address you choose, or collect it at an IMT desk.

Exam tip

You can usually ask for the theory test in English when it is booked. Practise with questions in your language and in English, so you know the exact words used in the exam.
